THE GIFT by Rafaella Marcus [5:20]
Directed by Jessica Lazar
Starring Olivia Marcus
A girl recounts an impossible meeting in which something is lost and someone is found.
Alchymy 2020 was due to host the ongoing development of Rafaella Marcus’s first play, SAP – a co-production by Atticist, EKP, and 45North for Paines Plough’s Roundabout at Edinburgh Fringe. SAP will be back, but in THE GIFT the writer and creative team take us briefly into the same world…
THIS IS A MAN by Luke Barnes [15:05]
Directed by Madeleine Kludje
Starring Liam Jeavons
A powerful investigation of masculinity and grief.
Every year, Alchymy commissions a monologue by an established writer in co-production with an emerging company, which is rehearsed, developed, and performed on site in the week of the festival. THIS IS A MAN comes from 2018, the second year of Alchymy Festival.
WE HAVE SINNED by Tife Kusuro [18:15]
Directed by Grace Cordell
Starring Seraphina Beh
Fifteen-year-old Esther goes to a girls only Catholic school. When she meets David, from the school across the road, her body begins to feel things it’s never felt before. She doesn’t know what to do with all her guilt.
WE HAVE SINNED was first developed during The North Wall’s ArtsLab Catalyst 2019, an intensive two-week free residency for early-career playwrights and directors to develop new work, and learn from established industry figures.
