Oxford Mountaineering Club Charity Film Night

Oxford Mountaineering Club and Gallery Bouldering invite you to an evening of award-winning outdoor cinematography from BritRock Films, in aid of Oxford Food Hub.

Join them for a screening of three highly acclaimed climbing films which tell the story of some of the most notable British rock climbing achievements of the last 30 years. The films feature stunning cinematography from the gritstone outcrops of Peak District to the 2000 foot granite walls of El Capitan in California via the mountains of the Scottish Highlands, as well a fascinating insight into the personalities of the climbers involved.

About the Films

Hard Grit
1998, 60 minutes

A rare chance to see this legendary, era-defining film on the big screen. It documents a single season on the gritstone edges of the Peak District with some of the leading climbers of the day and captures the end of an era before commercialism and professionalism took over at the cutting edge of the sport. Expect scary run outs, bad haircuts, and worse techno music.

Stone Free
2014, 29 minutes

Based on his award-winning memoir ‘Tears of the Dawn’ this is an intimate portrait of Britain’s most accomplished free-solo climber, Julian Lines. Featuring superb landscape cinematography from the mountains of Skye and the Cairngorms, stunning action footage on the crags and a deeply personal account of this archetypal anti-hero.

Nose Job
2024, 50 minutes

The incredible and highly entertaining story of two retired indoor competition climbers’ attempt to make the first British free ascent of one of the most famous rock climbs in the world – The Nose on El Capitan in Yosemite, California.

About the Oxford Food Hub

Despite being perceived as an affluent city, 29% of children in Oxford live on or below the poverty line; foodbank usage in Oxford is growing at a rate of around 47% year on year; and the number of rough sleepers in the city has increased four-fold over the last 10 years.  Oxford Food Hub works with food banks, community groups and schools to distribute surplus food from supermarkets, wholesalers and retail distributors. Since 2021, the number of groups receiving support from the charity has doubled. They now distribute surplus food to over 200 charities and community groups, supporting homeless shelters, food banks, hospices, refuges, mental health support centres and many more important causes. Proceeds from the evening will go towards helping the charity with their operating costs, including staff, delivery drivers, fuel and warehousing.
