Mary Knowland grew up surrounded by art; her father was a painter however her initial training was in ceramics with Robin Welch and then at Harrow School of Art. After many years exhibiting and selling, she returned, via a course in textiles, to her drawing and painting roots but has more recently included ceramics in her practice.
This collection of work offers us insights into her process of enquiry through line and a variety of media, working with the human form, the rhythms of the coast, the simplicity of everyday objects and natural forms.
Two approaches to making drawings and paintings will be apparent. Consciously controlled mark-making and brush strokes verging on the abstract, sit alongside a much freer approach where she is not looking at the subject while the work is in progress, yet capturing the essence of the subject. Development of an idea can be seen across a series of drawings where line also directly connects to the ceramics and, in its various forms, line is present throughout the exhibition.
