To mark their 10th anniversary, Oxford-based theatre company and North Wall Creative Associates Mandala Theatre present a double bill of new work:
Trojan Women by Karim Alrawi
Performed by Mandala Young Company
The Trojan Women is one of the most powerful indictments of war ever written. In this new version Karim Alrawi gives the play a twenty-first century lens. Focusing on superimposing the Trojan war on conflicts throughout history, the play is layered with women’s experience of conflict from Troy to one of the most harrowing conflicts of our time – Gaza. Despite their oppression, we see into the hearts and minds of these women and their children, their dignity, their pain, their loss and their love, as the collateral damage of men’s war and greed. Mandala Young Company turn this classic drama into a moving and relevant story exploring the humanity, dignity and courage of women and children in impossible situations.
Incarcerating Eve by Yasmin Sidhwa
Performed by Mandala Theatre Company
Eve has existed since the dawn of humanity, every woman, every age, every struggle. She is the indigenous woman, the pregnant teenager, the survivor, the accused witch, the silenced voice blamed for humanity’s fall.
Across history, Eve has been oppressed and condemned, but no more. She is awakening as the original Mother Goddess, Inanna: creator, nurturer, and keeper of wisdom. Eve’s rise is what the world needs now, if only we can free her.
Powerful and provocative, Mandala Theatre’s new play Incarcerating Eve confronts the devastating effects of suppressing the Feminine on families, society, and the natural world — and offers a bold vision of renewal and hope.
