Laura Hodgson, Ali Moreton and Rachel Payne: Land  marks

Laura Hodgson, Ali Moreton and Rachel Payne centre their practice in interpretation of landscapes. Colour, atmosphere and emotional connections shape their distinctive styles, complimenting each other through expressive mark making.

Laura Hodgson explores concepts of time and place through mixed media. She collects moments and experiences of the land through drawing and intuitive mark-making in small sketchbooks. Work develops through a history of layers evolving in an iterative conversation between self, process and experience.

Ali Moreton is a colourist who captures landscapes in plein air oil sketches. Immersed in the atmosphere, location and weather, sometimes she feels vulnerable, sometimes relaxed, everything feeds into her small paintings. These field sketches inform large studio paintings, where colour predominates in expressing connections to a landscape.

Rachel Payne’s pieces originate from the experiences of hiking in the Cotswolds.  She uses photographic material and memory to generate responses through a dialogue with mark making, colour application and media, which subsequently informs how the paintings materialise.
