Christina Taylor-Smith’s prints combine line and colour to evoke the rhythms and patterns found in both natural and man-made structures. Her pieces are distinguished by their rich textures and depth achieved through layering and the embossing of lines that create a sense of density and movement reminiscent of natural strata and the surface of the ocean. In recent works, she has incorporated metal leaf using its jewel-like quality to highlight the preciousness of nature which adds a reflective quality that interacts with light to enhance the visual experience.
Christina’s artistic process is intuitive, focusing on capturing the essence of her subjects with an awareness of the fragile and transient quality of a moment in time. Her lines are interconnecting, easily broken, lost and found, building-up consecutive lines that acquire a density and rhythm, which can be fragile or flowing like currents on the surface of the sea. This approach results in works that are both visually striking and thought-provoking, inviting viewers to contemplate the delicate balance between nature and man-made environments.
