Work Experience Diaries: May 2025

From 28 – 30 May 2025, we welcomed Amelie from King Alfred’s Academy for a week of work experience. Here’s how the week went, in her own words:

For my Year 10 work experience, I have spent the last three days talking to members of staff around the facility, learning how they do their jobs, helping / supporting / taking part in workshops and doing tasks and small jobs to help support the upcoming event – Spiral House, an all-inclusive sensory show dedicated for people with PMLD (profound and multiple learning disabilities) created by Frozen Light. It was exciting to see these two companies come together to create something so special and unique and bring it to life. I loved hearing and observing conversations between staff members trying to overcome problems and make it the best most accessible event for all people to experience. I have learnt that whatever challenges people face, there is always a way to solve it.

One of my favourite parts of the show is seeing the smiles on people’s faces, showing that what they do here are The North Wall is incredibly important if not vital. It lets people be who they are and become whoever they want to be. This show specifically lets people see, smell, taste, touch, and hear things that wouldn’t usually be accessible for them. It allows people to experience the world in a new weird and wonderful way. It has helped me understand the importance of these events, that there is no reason that the theatre shouldn’t be accessible for everyone.

The community that this arts centre creates is one like no other. The staff work extremely hard to make this place the best it can be, and to make it the most memorable place for everyone who enters. The people here at The North Wall, are people who will inspire and influence me my whole life. Their ideas, the way they think, how they see possibility in everything and will take every chance they get to create something new.

I will look back on my time at The North Wall forever. This has been and unforgettable journey that I will treasure greatly.
