Voice: How Sweetly You Burn

A programme celebrating women in music as composers, poets and performers from Hildegard of Bingen to the fresh wit of young female composers.

A cappella trio Voice perform Hildegard’s sacred devotional music from the 12th century alongside contemporary pieces and commissions of vibrant secular works by modern female composers.  The programme title is taken from the 2014 composition by Emily Levy for the trio, which explores the parallels between the plot of Hildegard’s play, Ordo Virtutem, and imagined experiences of love, betrayal, and loss in her own life. These themes also feature in the traditional songs included in the programme, all from the British Isles and all arranged by the trio, such as O Waly, Waly and the witty Lovely Joan.

How Sweetly You Burn includes compositions by: Hildegard of Bingen, Emily Levy, Stevie Wishart, Helen Chadwick, Ayanna Witter-Johnson, Carmel Whelen, and Virgina Firnberg.

This concert will take place at the Ogston Music School (opposite The North Wall). How Sweetly You Burn is one of a regular series of public events organised jointly by The North Wall and St Edward’s School. The School is pleased to be able to share these two vibrant cultural venues with as wide an audience as possible.
