Inspiring People: Julian Baggini

How The World Thinks

Dr Julian Baggini is the author, co-author or editor of over 20 books including How
The World Thinks, The Virtues of the Table, The Ego Trick, Freedom Regained (all Granta) and The Edge of Reason (Yale University Press). He was the founding editor of The Philosophers’ Magazine.

In this event, Julian Baggini will be discussing his global overview of philosophy, travelling the world to provide a wide-ranging map of human thought by exploring the philosophies of Japan, India, China and the Muslim world, as well as the lesser-known oral traditions of Africa and Australia’s first peoples.

Based on interviews with people from around the world, Baggini asks questions such as: why is the West more individualistic than the East? What makes secularism a less powerful force in the Islamic world than in Europe? And how has China resisted pressures for greater political freedom?
