SUMMER SCHOOL 2007
Among the original aims of the North Wall was the establishment of a residential drama summer school for young people aged 16-20, which would create, without any charge to the participants, a company of actors, writers, composers, designers and technicians.

The first North Wall Summer School ran from August 1st to 22nd, 2007, and was generously sponsored by the Garfield Weston Foundation. It was directed by Edward Kemp, recently appointed Artistic Director of RADA, and Lucy Maycock, Director of Drama at St Edward’s Oxford, assisted by a professional staff of theatre technicians and designers. The auditions were advertised nationally in secondary schools, and as a result a company of 17 was formed, drawn from all parts of the UK.

The project was based on the novel ‘Mr Vertigo’ by Paul Auster, the story of a young orphaned boy from St Louis, who meets a mysterious traveller known only as Master Yehudi and is trained by him to levitate before travelling across the United States performing this feat at circus shows.

The company, working as an ensemble, devised scenes from the novel over a three-week period, and had full use of the North Wall’s facilities: theatre, dance studio, drama studio and theatre workshop. At the end of the course these scenes were performed before an invited audience.
