Diamond Light Source
Mon 11th - Fri 29th Jan 10
Research carried out at the UK’s national synchrotron facility, Diamond Light Source, which is based in South Oxfordshire, has been interpreted into art by local artists and community groups.

Science in a new light brings together these creations in a thought-provoking exhibition that highlights the importance of the scientific research happening within the county, and the opportunity to express it using alternative methods.

Inspired by the work of Diamond, along with the iconic building itself, three artists each created pieces that reflect their thoughts on the subject, as a result of a 12 month residency at the facility. Science in a new light is the first time these works of art will be on open public display.

Visitors will also have the opportunity to take a closer look at the 30 stunning Designs for Life textile panels. The result of an innovative sci-art project that tasked the Oxfordshire Federation of the Women’s Institute (WI) to create works of textile art that depict some of the ’dangerously beautiful’ diseases and viruses that are studied using Diamond’s extremely intense X-rays, which are 10 billion times brighter than the sun.

Running alongside the works of art will be a number of educational activities, a local business networking event, as well as opportunities for visitors to get involved and discover the science taking place on their doorstep.
